End of the Vigil! « Thread Started on Sept 18, 2006, 11:10am »
Yes, just like "Immortality" before it, Nickel's other masterful short story "The Long Vigil" has finally ended its watch!
A time for mourning as there'll be no more updates? Or a time for celebration that the whole story can now be read from beginning to end? It's a tough call!

Good question!
I no longer have the original files on PC (somebody hit the self-destruct button on my hard drive a while back!) but, luckily, I haven't thrown out any old papers in a long time and so I've managed to find some yellowing print-outs from way back when.
Apparently (and this came as a surprise to me when I found it) Page 8 didn't say anything at all ... anywhere!
Page 7 ends with the killing of Diana by Kurt and then, on Page 8, there isn't one line of dialogue or a single caption. (I obviously tinkered even more than I remembered!)
I did remember the effect of my changes correctly though. Without the captions on Page 8, the story is a horror tale in which Kurt has to kill each of his crew-mates in turn. With them, we have an extra psychological twist which reverses their roles.
I think I'd better save those old hard copies somewhere safe!
