Okay, this is an oddity.
Whenever I'm asked why I do what I do (i.e. write stories) I never have a very good answer. I can only say (quite truthfully) that I've never wanted to do anything else. I've always felt that that's what I was meant to do. It doesn't take much additional probing to make me confess that my first attempt at a novel was called Prince Sashtan and that I wrote it at the age of nine or maybe even as young as eight. (I know I can't have been any older because, by the age of ten I was writing my second novel!)
Of course, when I call it a novel, you have to understand that what constitutes a novel for an eight or nine year old is not exactly going to rival War and Peace!
Prince Sashtan is ten chapters long. The shortest chapter is two pages long (A5) and the longest weighs in at a massive nine A5 pages, all fully illustrated, handwritten and (when typed) none of them amounting to more than a paragraph or two. But, hey - it was a novel to me!
In fact, it was so very much a novel that I made it a hardback cover from pieces of cardboard and wrapped it in a plastic bag to make it look like the novels I used to get from the local library.
So ... what was this childhood epic about? Essentially it's my attempt to emulate (dare I say "copy"?!) The Chronicles of Narnia. It's a story of two children transported to a magical fantasy land peopled by mythical creatures and animals who pepper their speech with more than a sprinkling of "thees" and "thous". (Sound familiar?!) There they must overthrow an evil king who has imprisoned his own son, in order to secure the succession for his brother. Exciting stuff!
I don't know if you guys are interested in seeing this stuff but it still amuses me, so I've decided to post it at the BVC website anyway. The first two chapters will be up shortly (maybe even later today!) so look out for them.
This really is where it all began, folks!

Well, that's it for Prince Sashtan, I'm afraid! We've just posted the last two chapters (Chapter 9 and Chapter 10) and so - if you've been following this little Narnia "inspired" adventure - you can now see how it ends.
Regular readers might also be interested to see the orginal cover which I made from cardboard, paper and a plastic bag to give it that authentic "library book" feel. Go on, take a look - you know you want to!
If you're not a regular reader and you've never visited Prince Sashtan before, what are you waiting for? Now's your chance to read the whole "novel" from the very beginning!
